Brian Blessed joins controversy over Ripper T-shirt
Brian Blessed joins controversy over Ripper T-shirt
Controversy continues to rage over a tasteless novelty T-shirt bearing a cartoon of the Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe after another famous face was dragged into the row.
The T-shirt stirred up such rage among the public and families of the Ripper’s victims when the Telegraph & Argus first broke the story that its makers were forced to withdraw it from sale and redesign it.
Instead of Sutcliffe, they have now replaced him with Yorkshire actor Brian Blessed.

Margaret Clark, headteacher of Newhills School said: "Pupils and staff thought it would be fun and educational to have a readathon to celebrate World Book Day and to dress up as a well-known character from a book.
"We all have our Where's Wally? hats and scarfs on so we are having a great celebrating World Book Day while the readathon gives senior pupils the opportunity to read to younger pupils which we hope will encourage a lifelong enjoyment of books."
Jill Dando Hit Man Claims
'This wasn't the work of a loner, this was a professional hit': Lawyer backs Jill Dando assassination claim
Barrister Michael Mansfield QC says he was always convinced she was targeted by a trained assassin after angering dictator Slobodan Milosevic
Compelling evidence supporting the theory Jill Dando was executed by a Serb hitman has been put forward by Barry George’s defence lawyer.
Barrister Michael Mansfield QC, whose client was convicted but later cleared of murdering the BBC’s golden girl, says he was always convinced she was targeted by a trained assassin after angering dictator Slobodan Milosevic.
The Mirror revealed on Saturday that the widow of a Serbian journalist – shot dead on his doorstep in almost identical circumstances just days before Jill died on April 26, 1999 – believes Milosevic hitmen were behind both murders
Mr Mansfield also told the Mirror everything indicated Jill was shot by a professional killer who may have had help – not a weird loner.
Here, the respected lawyer presents the hard evidence backing the Serb link.
Aberdeen City Council welcomes court ruling on AWPR
Aberdeen City Council today welcomed a Court of Session decision to reject a second legal challenge against the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route [AWPR].
Judges today [Weds 29 Feb] rejected the appeal by campaigners, who had argued that the public inquiry and the public consultation on the AWPR had been flawed.
Scottish Ministers gave the scheme the go-ahead in December 2009 following a lengthy public inquiry. But the scheme to build the 28-mile AWPR was delayed by legal proceedings at the Court of Session in Edinburgh following an appeal against that decision. Judges rejected the appeal last summer – but a second appeal was then lodged, which the Court of Session today announced it had rejected.
Aberdeen City Council Leader Councillor Callum McCaig said: "The vast majority of citizens in the North-east will hail this decision as great news for the region and the whole of Scotland. We have all waited many years to reach this crucial stage – and now we must waste no more time and get on with construction.
