Rice Leather to Rice Wool? Asif Ali Gohar Discuses the Future of His Brand
When he was in high school Asif Ali Gohar took a risk and turned a school project into a brand, a business, and a way of life. With all the changes that are occurring in the fashion industry, and in manufacturing, we asked if he plans to expand his brand and product line to include additional products. Here is how the conversation went.

Thank you for joining us today, we are excited to learn what is next for your business.

I am happy to be here and share with you what I am able too. Of course there are always a few secrets that I can’t share until they are ready for the big launch.

There have been some rumours that you might expand your line and try new products, is there any truth to this?

There is some truth to the rumours but maybe not all of them. We are experimenting with expanding to some different materials, perhaps a suede version of our leather, or maybe a wool for winter garments, as a way to add more texture to some of the designs they are used in. This will allow people to use our materials to be a centrepiece in their work and some designers want to make a whole vegan line.

Is there a lot of progress with your Rice Wool or is it still in mostly planning stages at this time?

There has been a lot of progress in the research stage, and we have started to experiment with how to adapt the process to create the new texture and how to get the right density. Wool is a very different material from leather, but with a suede we may be able to change the process just a little to add destressing and have it feel and look like suede.

Both are in the works, but one is definitely further along than the other and more likely to debut in the next year.

How does the Rice Wool you are working on compare to the wool that we are used to, or the synthetic wool that is already on the market?

The wool that we are making should feel similar to the real thing after it has been made into garments, and it will be a bit thinner and easier to work with. It will have a rougher surface than the leather, and it will continue to gain character as it ages. It will provide warmth, style, and be a vegan alternative to those who want something as simple as a basic wool suit or a thick wool coat to keep warm in the cold months.

You also mentioned a possible suede, is that going to be something that we can expect soon?

I wouldn’t say soon, as things take years to develop and get just right. It may be ready sooner than the wool, or it may take another year.

Lincolnshire Police Officer Jailed For 20 Months
Former Lincolnshire Police Officer Jailed for Abuse of Power

A former Lincolnshire Police Officer who was based at Boston has been jailed for 20 months. PC Shaun Wheeler, 56, engaged in sexual relations with a woman he met after she reported being abused by her ex has been jailed for his "appalling abuse of power".

In a shocking display of misconduct, former Lincolnshire Police PC Shaun Wheeler, 56, has been sentenced to 20 months in jail for his "appalling abuse of power."

Wheeler engaged in sexual relations with a woman he met after she reported being abused by her ex-partner.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigated Wheeler's actions, revealing a disturbing pattern of misconduct.

Shaun Wheeler's abuse of power became evident when it was discovered that he had sent over 3,000 messages to the woman who had reported abuse. Instead of providing the support and protection she sought, Wheeler pursued an intimate relationship with her.

Shockingly, Wheeler who was based in Boston engaged in sexual activity with the woman while on duty, visiting her home to take her police statement. This breach of trust and professional conduct is a grave offense that undermines the integrity of the police force.

Following their initial encounter, Wheeler continued his relationship with the woman, who disclosed her struggles with suicidal thoughts. During this time, Wheeler sent explicit videos and pictures of himself to the victim.

The emotional scars left on the woman are immeasurable, as she was taken advantage of by a person who should have been protecting her. This betrayal not only shattered her sense of safety but also eroded her trust in law enforcement.

The IOPC investigation revealed that Wheeler's misconduct extended beyond one victim. Another woman, whom he met while on duty, was subjected to sexually inappropriate messages from Wheeler.

This pattern of misconduct demonstrates a disturbing disregard for professional boundaries and a blatant abuse of power. Additionally, while suspended from the force, Wheeler volunteered at a mental health support group for young adults. It was alleged that he also engaged in sending sexual messages to a vulnerable woman within the group, further illustrating his predatory behaviour.

In a statement given to Nottingham Crown Court about the impact on her life, the woman said: "I was taken advantage of and now all I am left with are these emotional scars."

She added: "I used to feel safe seeing a police officer, but I never think that now. He used me for his own sexual gain when he should have been in a role protecting people."

Recognizing the severity of Wheeler's actions, he admitted to two counts of misconduct in a public office. As a result, he was sentenced to 20 months in jail.

Deputy Chief Constable of Lincolnshire Police, Julia Debenham, condemned Wheeler's behaviour, emphasizing that his actions go against the very principles that the police force upholds.

She said: “Wheeler's misconduct is a disgrace to the uniform and a betrayal of public trust. The sentencing serves as a reminder that no one is above the law, and those who abuse their positions of power will face consequences.”

The victims of Wheeler's misconduct have been deeply affected by his actions. The woman who reported abuse by her ex-partner expressed feeling used and violated. Her perception of police officers, once a source of safety, has been forever altered.

The emotional scars left by Wheeler's abuse will likely linger, impacting her ability to trust others and seek help when needed. Similarly, the other victims of Wheeler's inappropriate behaviour have been subjected to emotional distress and a breach of their trust in law enforcement.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) played a crucial role in uncovering Wheeler's misconduct. Their investigation shed light on the extent of his abuse of power and helped bring him to justice.

The IOPC's commitment to ensuring police accountability and maintaining public trust is paramount in cases such as this. By holding officers accountable for their actions, the IOPC reinforces the integrity of the police force and sends a clear message that misconduct will not be tolerated.

The revelation of Wheeler's misconduct highlights the need for ongoing efforts to rebuild trust between the public and law enforcement. Instances like this erode public confidence and make it imperative for police departments to prioritize transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct.

Stricter protocols, thorough background checks, and regular evaluations can help prevent individuals who may be prone to abusing their power from joining the police force. Additionally, fostering an environment where victims feel safe and supported when reporting misconduct is crucial to preventing similar incidents in the future.

Invasion of ‘rats the size of chihuahuas’ turns neighbourhood into no-go area

A street in Glasgow has been overrun by giant rats (Picture: Glasgow Evening Times / SWNS)

Bin men have declared a street in Glasgow to be a no-go zone after an influx of giant rats said to be ‘the size of chihuahuas’.

Union bosses have ordered refuse collectors to stay away from Earl Street in Glasgow’s west end after they were overrun by vermin the size of small dogs.

But residents have complained the lack of action has left their street looking even worse.

Bin officials claim the move is to avoid compromising the safety of their workers.

Residents claim the lack of action from bin collectors is making the problem worse (Picture: Glasgow Evening Times / SWNS)

Local Sam Whitehouse, 70, said: ‘We can’t have our bins left all over the place.

‘It is unsightly and unhygienic practice to have these in front of our houses.

‘I’ve seen rats out the back, and there is a big problem with them, but surely all that this is going to achieve is to attract them to the front instead.

‘They are going to look for food wherever they can find it. I don’t see how moving where the bins are situated will act as a deterrent.’

The situation was reportedly set in motion after one bin staff described seeing rats ‘the size of chihuahuas’ in the back courtyards of Earl Street residences.

Chris Mitchell, GMB convenor for Glasgow’s cleansing workers, said ‘I’ve been raising this issue for years and we’re still waiting on something being done.

‘Our members’ health and wellbeing are being put at risk because the areas are now overrun by huge rats.

Locals are furious over the decision to only empty the bins once every three weeks (Picture: Glasgow Evening Times / SWNS)

‘Vermin have been known to bite and leave droppings all over the place. It’s only a matter of time before someone ends up ill because of this.

‘Our members rightly feel that the issue needs to be sorted out and will not be stepping foot into the rear bin areas of Earl Street until the rat infestation is properly dealt with.

‘There is an embankment that runs along the back of the properties where the rats nest. That is what is causing the problem.’

Sam says that a lack of collections is putting extra pressure on elderly people to find somewhere to dispose of their waste – and is not happy with the council response.

He said: ‘We got letters through the door, and I was upset by the tone of them.

‘The language was very confrontational and the demands were draconian, in my opinion.

‘We didn’t opt to move the bins or only have them emptied every three weeks, but now it looks like it has become the residents’ problem.

‘The bins are lying there for anyone to use – all sorts of things are being stuffed into them by people walking past.

‘We’ve now been told that if they are full, it is up to us to find somewhere else for our household rubbish to go.

‘I’m not fit to traipse around looking for a recycling point or a half-empty bin that doesn’t belong to me.

‘I don’t believe the onus for this should be on tenants when I pay council tax for a regular and reliable refuse collection service.

‘We don’t want rats running around, and we certainly don’t want big bins the length of the front street.’

A spokesperson from Glasgow City Council says that they are aware of the issues and concerns.

‘We have been working with the local housing association to address this problem,’ the council claims.

The giant rats are said to be the size of a chihuahua (Picture: Getty)

‘Some bin courts in the area were previously in poor condition, but work has been undertaken to keep them in good order.

‘While the bait laid down by our pest control team takes effect, bins have been stationed on the street on a temporary basis.

‘We are hopeful our pest control treatments at this location are having an impact but we will continue to monitor this situation closely.

‘Once the pest problem has been dealt with, bins can be returned to the back court area and will be fully serviced by our staff.

‘As part of our health and safety procedures, we would not send our bin collection staff into areas of known infestation.’

Phillip Schofield Plans To Make TV Return
Phillip Schofield's Anticipated Return to Television: A Three-Step Revival Plan Unveiled

Former This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield has told friends that he plans to make a TV return after quitting ITV This Morning show.

Renowned television personality, Phillip Schofield, known for his 21-year tenure on ITV's This Morning, appears to have charted a course for his television comeback. His name may have been removed from this year's National Television Awards nominations, and his place on the This Morning couch filled, but Schofield has a plan to return, as explained by an industry expert.

Schofield shocked fans by abruptly leaving the ITV show in May, rumoured to have been stirred by a feud with co-presenter Holly Willoughby. Furthermore, he exited the station entirely following a confession of an 'imprudent but not illegal' relationship with a younger colleague.

Post his exit, Schofield was seen retreating to his mother's residence in Cornwall, joined by his supportive daughter Ruby. After his revealing interview with BBC, fans speculated over when they would see the well-loved presenter on their screens again.

Holly Willoughby who famously said she would always be there for Phillip has been accused of betraying him by not standing by him. Many believe that Phillip Schofield made Holly Willoughby the star she is today, while some believe she is nothing without her former co-host.

Phillip Schofield has unfollowed his former co-host Holly on Instagram on the eve of the NTAs - her first for This Morning without Phillip.

In August, the beleaguered presenter was seen in high spirits when he was spotted dining with friend and fellow television personality Vanessa Feltz. The duo was seen engaging in animated conversation, with Schofield noticeably beaming. Vanessa's public outing with Schofield, at a time when many others were distancing themselves, made a clear statement.

Many This Morning viewers have said they don’t want Holly Willoughby back, and according to recent viewing figures, since her return, the ITV show has lost viewers.

This Morning viewers have turned to social media and claimed that the ITV show was much better in the summer without Holly Willougby, but it seems that ITV are ignoring the viewers and sticking with Holly.

The Three-Step Comeback Plan

Edward Coram-James, a crisis communications and PR expert at Go Up, proposes that Schofield has a three-part strategy for reputational recovery. The first move was his "very well executed" tell-all BBC interview on June 2.

Step 1 - The Confession

In his interview, Schofield was candid with the public about the aftermath of his affair. He confessed to having "lost everything" resulting from his misstep.

"Schofield is a presenting veteran and was always going to fare better in such circumstances than the likes of the Duke of York. He is used to being in front of the camera, being personable, amendable and human, and saying what he has to say." - Edward Coram-James

Step 2 - The Distraction

Ed suggests that Schofield's recovery plan inadvertently received a boost from the scandal surrounding Huw Edwards. The public comparisons drawn between the two crises served to distract from Schofield's predicament.

Step 3 - A New Image

The third phase in Schofield's image recovery, according to Ed, is to be reintegrated into the public sphere. High-profile figures like Vanessa Feltz stepping up to support Schofield is a crucial step in this direction.

Ed believes that once Schofield is seen more regularly on screens, there is a good chance a network might offer him a permanent position. However, he cautions that this would only happen once those in power see that the risk to themselves has been significantly reduced.

Some other experts believe that Phillip Schofield could become a contestant on Celebrity Jungle with Ant & Dec, which could put him back in favour with the viewers and land him a permanent role back on TV.

Drivers Shocked At Rise In Petrol Prices
Fuel Prices Surge: Drivers Face Record Monthly Increase

Drivers are angry over the huge price increase on petrol with some petrol stations in Grimsby, Skegness, Manchester, Leeds, Boston, Sheffield, Lincoln, Scunthorpe, and Morecombe, charging as much as £1.51.9 per litre.

In August, drivers across the country were hit with one of the largest monthly fuel price increases in over two decades. According to recent data, the average price of petrol reached a staggering £152.25p.

Diesel prices shot up by 8p, climbing to an average of 154.37p. These significant hikes added nearly £4 to the cost of filling up a tank, putting a strain on consumers' wallets.

The surge in fuel prices can be attributed to several key factors. One of the primary causes is the production cuts enforced by OPEC+ nations. These cuts were aimed at bolstering the price of oil, resulting in a rapid rise in wholesale costs. The price of oil has surged by $12 per barrel in just two months, causing a ripple effect that has quickly reached the pumps.

Simon Williams, a spokesperson for the RAC, expressed his concern over the steep increases, describing them as "galling" and "a big shock to drivers." He emphasized that the magnitude of these price hikes is unprecedented in recent history, ranking among the highest monthly jumps in 23 years for both petrol and diesel.

He said: 'August was a big shock to drivers as they had grown used to seeing far lower prices than last summer's record highs.

'Seeing £4 or more go on to the cost of a tank in the space of just a few weeks from a pump price rise of 6-7p a litre is galling, particularly for those who drive lots of miles or run an older, less fuel-efficient car.'

The repercussions of these soaring fuel prices extend beyond the immediate impact on drivers' pockets. The sharp rise poses a setback for efforts to control inflation, as rising fuel costs typically contribute to increased inflation rates. This is because higher fuel prices directly affect the transportation costs of goods, resulting in higher prices for consumers.

The current surge in fuel prices is particularly concerning in light of the ongoing economic recovery. As businesses strive to bounce back from the challenges posed by the pandemic, the additional financial burden of increased fuel costs puts further pressure on their operations. Small businesses, in particular, may find it increasingly difficult to maintain their profitability amid these rising expenses.

Given the current circumstances, drivers may need to explore strategies to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices. Here are some tips to consider:

- Adopt Fuel-Efficient Driving Practices: By implementing habits such as smooth acceleration and reducing unnecessary idling, drivers can maximize their fuel efficiency and reduce overall consumption.

- Compare Fuel Prices: Utilize online resources and mobile applications to compare fuel prices in your area. This allows you to find the most affordable options and potentially save on each fill-up.

- Consider Alternative Transportation: Exploring alternative modes of transportation, such as carpooling, public transit, or cycling, can help reduce dependence on personal vehicles and lower fuel expenses.

- Plan Efficient Routes: Planning your journeys in advance and choosing the most efficient routes can minimize mileage and consequently reduce fuel consumption.

- Vehicle Maintenance: Keeping your vehicle properly maintained, including regular oil changes, tire checks, and air filter replacements, can optimize fuel efficiency and prevent unnecessary fuel wastage.

Rishi Sunak Asleep Over Record Migrant Numbers
More than 800 migrants crossed the English Channel in small boats on Saturday

Rishi Sunak is being accused of being asleep over the migrant crisis. On Saturday 2 September, the highest number of migrants on a single day crossed the channel.

The Prime Minister has been accused of being asleep on the job when it comes to dealing with the migrant crisis. With news that Skegness business owners are angry at the popular seaside resort being turned into a migrant capital, a record number of migrants crossed the channel on Saturday 2nd September.

Rishi Sunak has wasted £478 million of taxpayers’ money which he gave to the French to stop the migrants crossing the channel. But, just like Rishi Sunak, the French government has also been accused of being asleep.

Questions have been asked about why Rishi Sunak gave the French Government the money and what they are doing with it. With record numbers crossing the channel, it doesn’t seem it is being used to stop the migrants entering the UK illegally.

On Saturday, a staggering 872 migrants made the perilous journey on 15 small vessels, averaging around 58 individuals per boat. This surpasses the previous high of 756 people recorded on August 10.

Since the start of 2023, a total of 20,973 migrants have successfully crossed the Channel, despite Rishi Sunak's pledge to "stop the boats." However, it is worth noting that the overall figure for this year is lower compared to the same period last year when 25,000 individuals had already made the treacherous journey.

The highest number of crossings in a single day since records began in 2018 remains 1,295, recorded on August 22, 2022.

The arrivals on Saturday contribute to a weekly total of 1,172 migrants who have made the journey, with crossings being recorded on just two out of six days. Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, 300 migrants arrived, adding to the growing numbers. The frequency and scale of these crossings raise concerns about the government's ability to effectively address the issue.

The surge in migrant crossings has sparked criticism, with Labour Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper accusing the prime minister of "badly breaking his promise" to curb illegal immigration. Cooper also criticized the Conservative government for failing to gain control over criminal smuggling gangs operating on Britain's borders. These criticisms highlight the need for a comprehensive and effective approach to tackling the issue.

As part of the government's anti-immigration policies, a plan to detain almost everyone who enters the UK illegally and deport them to Rwanda has been proposed but not implemented.

In August 2023, the average number of migrants crossing the Channel per boat reached a new monthly high. A total of 5,369 individuals made the journey in 102 boats, averaging around 53 migrants per vessel. This monthly average represents the highest recorded since records began in 2018, underscoring the urgency of finding effective solutions to address the crisis.

Although some of the public agrees with migrants being housed, others have questioned why the government is wasting more than £5 million a day housing migrants who officially are entering the country illegally and could be classed as criminals.

A large portion of the public is against the housing of migrants while taxpayers are struggling daily to pay bills and feed their children. Some are disgusted that they are struggling to pay their mortgage while migrants are being put in 4-star hotels.

One thing that most people agree on, that is Rishi Sunk is not dealing with the problem and money is being wasted on the problem
